Though Hannah Whitall Smith knew firsthand the world's darkness and grief, she was confident that "somewhere and somehow God [was] going to make everything right for all the creatures He has created." As a speaker and writer in the nineteenth-century evangelical church, Whitall Smith faced criticism for what was then considered to be radical and unorthodox theology. Her writings are still often censored to remove the more "heretical" portions, but Whitall Smith's only "heresy" is her belief in Divine love, a love stronger than any obstacle. As a mother, she knew how much she loved her children—and she could not believe that God's love could be weaker than her own.

The New Testament says we are members of a body, an organic union of individuals helping each other to do and be all that we can. Although Hannah Whitall Smith lived more than a century ago, in God of All Comfort, she still reaches out to others within the Body of Christ, enriching us all with her deep and hard-earned confidence in God's love.
